Blue Bottle Coffee was founded in Oakland in 2002 by James Freeman, a clarinetist who started roasting in a potting shed and selling at farmers markets, promising to serve coffee no more than 48 hours out of the roaster. It grew into one of the defining third-wave roasters, known for single-origin pour-overs and New Orleans-style iced coffee, with cafés across the US, Japan, South Korea and beyond (majority-owned by Nestlé since 2017). In Kyoto its Nanzenji café occupies a century-old machiya townhouse renovated by Schemata Architects.

Named after the lofted ceilings of the former Mint Plaza café and inspired by classic Italian espresso: Latin American and East African coffees accented with fine robusta for depth and crema.
Caramel, almond, dried cherry
Blue Bottle’s take on the classic Moka-Java profile and its most popular blend: organic coffees from Africa and Indonesia, with a natural-process Ethiopian adding a fruity edge to a bold base. Good black or with milk.

The foundation of Blue Bottle’s café espresso drinks and its darkest espresso, fully organic, with a tawny crema and heavy body that softens into a sweeter, assertive drink with milk.

A creamy decaf with malty sweetness and no sharp edges; smooth black, richer with milk, and works from espresso to French press.
