Dean’s Beans was founded in 1993 by Dean Cycon, an environmental and indigenous-rights attorney, to use organic specialty coffee as a vehicle for positive change in coffee-growing communities. Roasted at its beanery in Orange, Massachusetts, every coffee is certified organic and fairly traded, much of it from long-standing cooperative partners such as COSURCA in Colombia (since 1993); the company is a Certified B Corporation and has been 100% worker-owned since 2023. Roast Magazine named it a Roaster of the Year finalist in 2020, 2022 and 2023. Sold online and wholesale; no walk-in café.

Ahab's Revenge
Ahab's Revenge
$19.59 / 1lb

Years ago, someone threw down a challenge: “Hey Dean, can you make a coffee that stands up to that big name brew we all know?” Well, never one to turn down a good adventure, we set sail on a quest for something deep, rich, and unforgettable. The result? A bold blend built on Indian robusta and Timor arabica. Instead of harsh and bitter, it’s smooth, full-bodied, and just the right kind of strong to get you through stormy seas (or Monday mornings). As for the name, we took a little inspiration from Moby Dick and Captain Ahab’s fierce spirit. Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee - and they know how to grow those beans! Our coffee comes from the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, made up of 34 member coops spread throughout the central plateau of Sidama. We’ve partnered with the farmers of Sidama for many years, becoming one of the first to introduce Fair Trade, Organic Ethiopian coffee to the U.S. in 2008 . Migration Celebration

Our relationship with COMSA is new (2016) but has grown quickly. COMSA is a leader in organic coffee production practices, boasting impressive yields year after year, through their use of organic fertilizers and teaching farmers cultivation standards that prize respecting and collaborating with nature. They have become an industry leader, setting the standard for other cooperatives to follow. We are excited to see what the future holds. One thing is for sure, this coffee shines. Nicaraguan French Roast

In the mountains surrounding Estelí, Nicaragua, our partners at PRODECOOP produce some of the finest high-altitude coffees in Central America. Our relationship with PRODECOOP is our longest-standing partnership, beginning in 1993, in the wake of Nicaragua’s brutal civil war. For decades, we’ve worked alongside these farmers as they rebuilt their lives with grit, resilience and hope. Our coffee comes from two small cooperatives within the PRODECOOP led by Jose Benito Diaz and Vincente Talabera, totaling 57 members, and named after the Miraflor natural reserve. Our story with Atsabe began in 2009, when Dean’s Beans became the first roaster to source coffee directly from this remote community. What started as a trading partnership has grown into a true relationship built on trust and shared purpose. Together, we’ve supported schools, youth programs that open doors to opportunity, and rural health clinics that provide life-saving care. During our visit to Timor in the fall of 2023 we visited nearby Malabe, where the one small clinic is a lifeline for farming families who once had to travel hours for even the most basic treatment. Washed Ethiopian Sidama Boa Bedegelo

Ethiopia is the famed birthplace of coffee, and the Sidama region remains one of its most celebrated growing areas. Our Ethiopian coffees come from two member coops in the Sidama Union, a natural processed coffee from Telamo and a washed coffee from Boa Bedegalo. Both are members of the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, a network of 34 member co-ops and more than 80,000 smallholder farmers across the central plateau. Each farm averages less than a hectare, (1 hectare = just under 2.5 acres) but together they produce some of the most storied and distinctive coffees in the world.
